A pretty pink and stone (petra in Greek) exterior gives this splendid villa its name. With superb sea views, bordered by forests and within walking distance (1km) to Maganos village what’s not to love!
A wonderful private swimming pool at the front of Rosepetra makes the most of the panoramic expanse of trees that tumble down to the glittering sea with Ithaca in the distance. The garden immediately below is a backdrop for the almost tropically lush green hillsides bordering it, the area is thick with firs and olives and rich with flora and fauna. The tranquil relaxing atmosphere of the pool terrace means only a serious diversion like picturesque Fiscardo harbour (4.8 km) could tear you away.
Tastefully decorated the creamy lemon coloured farmhouse kitchen is compact and well appointed, and the general décor is a clever mix of traditional and modern that suits the informal, charming ambience. The unusual façade has the living/dining/kitchen area to the right of the front door under a pointed roof, whilst to the left are the bedrooms nestled under a flatter ceramic roof, linked by the main foyer. Both the twin and the double bedrooms have French doors that open onto the pool terrace and are light and airy
Maganos (1km) is a pretty village that has a traditional taverna and kafenion where backgammon and Greek coffees are served, a well stocked mini market, a colourful greengrocers and even a hardware shop. Above the village, old country roads lead out in every direction to old vine terraces, fields and woodland, all picture perfect settings for sunsets, an ideal base for walking and exploring. Following the signpost saying “Alaties” down a little alleyway off the village high street, there is a fork in the road leading to two beaches; tiny sandy Alaties (3.2km) to the right reached by steps below a taverna, and St Jerusalem to the left. Off the beaten track, the road passes through lovely hamlets of crumbling Venetian houses and St Jerusalem’s sandy/shingle beach has an old fashioned taverna with home cooked delicacies; it’s best to get there early, there’s only one waiter.
Hiring a boat to explore the northe eastern shores south of Fiscardo gives the chance to flit in and out of the many inaccessible coves and inlets, find a bay completely to yourselves for the day and take a picnic. Feeling adventurous? Open up the throttle and head for Ithaca, 25 minutes away, dock at the sheltered bay at Polis and compare the vastness of Kefalonia withthis smaller but no less perfectly formed Island.
