Location and local information
Roissac is a small village set amongst the rolling vineyard country of the 'Grande Champagne', home to the finest 'cru' of Cognac, an area characterised by sleepy pan-tiled villages of grand cognac producers' houses, ancient romanesque churches and beautiful walks amongst the vines. Many cognac producers offer tours of their distilleries and tastings of their produce.
Just 5 miles away is the historic town of Cognac, home to Hennessy, Martell and Remy Martin amongst others, as well as an excellent gourmet market, many attractions and amenities (Mediaeval centre, Chateau, Church, Museums, great shops etc.), and the small towns of Gensac la Pallue and Segonzac are even closer with excellent bakeries, small restaurants and bars, local shops and markets on weekends.
The river Charente is close by for swimming, and there are several local historical attractions within a fifteen minute drive, including the ruined castle at Bouteville - perfect for picnics - and the mediaeval abbey of Bassac. Half an hour's drive away are the beautiful towns of Saintes with its Roman arch, ampitheatre and cathedral: mediaeval Pons on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrim trail with its donjon and pilgrims' hospital and the stunning city of Angouleme with its famous ramparts, cathedral and fantastic shopping and dining.
The coast with excellent beaches is less than an hour away at Royan, and easy day trips can be made to La Rochelle, Perigueux, the Gironde estuary and Medoc wine trail, the Ile de Re and Ile D'Oleron and the Unesco world heritage site city of Bordeaux. Cognac has a good train service to all previously mentioned towns and cities and Angouleme is served by the TGV network.
Walking and cycling opportunities abound in the surrounding countryside, there is an excellent golf course in Cognac, and kayaking and swimming are available on the Charente river just a few miles away. For families Cognac features a free open air pool and play park in summer months, and there is a major water park at Jonzac at just forty minutes drive.
Cognac hosts a series of festivals most notably Cognac Blues festival which draws crowds from across the world and recently featured eclectic but well known acts such as BB King, Gil Scott Heron, Massive Attack, Moby, Texas and even ZZ Top! (dates for the festival vary, usually July).
Every town and village in the region hosts its own 'Brocante' throughout summer. These outdoor antiques and bric a brac fairs are the perfect place to browse, soak up the sun and find some amazing bargains in often stunning settings
Excellent local restaurants cater for all tastes and budgets, from the michelin starred La Ribaudiere to small family owned bistros. Regional specialities - apart from Cognac -include the delicious apertitif Pineau, creamy goats cheeses, delicious, unbelievably cheap and plentiful oysters (from 3 euros a dozen), truffles, foie gras, fresh water trout and even a locally produced caviare!
All guests will receive our own hand produced guide to the local area based on years of experience, however we are still making fresh discoveries and open to suggestions!
