Located on the outskirts of the tiny hamlet of Veni, no more than a cluster of houses, Anastasia is a hidden gem tucked away behind lush foliage. Dramatically jutting out from the hillside, the private pool sits in a unique location offering superb views that stretch across the verdant Cretan hills. As far as the eye can see neat rows of olive trees intermingle with a patchwork landscape of fields and woods, the mauve Psilioritis Mountains providing a quite majestic backdrop.
Situated on an upper level to the pool, equally appealing vistas can also be savoured from the main body of the house. Here the front dining terrace makes a wonderful setting from which to admire the impressively grand panorama and, in particular, some very memorable sunsets.
Internally the bright white living/dining area has a high wooden ceiling, beige tiled floors and a pretty, conical fireplace blending with the more contemporary décor resulting from Anastasia’s recent renovation. Unpretentious yet well equipped, the kitchen has plenty of windows framing picture postcard views. The twin and double bedrooms continue the fresh modern theme, with pretty colourful bedspreads and flowing white curtains. A soft, cooling zephyr often wafts through the house thanks to the higher elevation.
Around the impressively situated private pool palm and plane trees, paw-paw cacti, gorse and broom render multiple shades of green against the azure Mediterranean sky. The property’s terrace and gardens are brilliantly festooned with red carnations, purple and pink bougainvillea and a gnarled olive tree provides shade in the heat of the day when the gentle hum of cicadas is the only distraction. Adding a gently bohemian touch to the evenings, Moroccan lamps have been adroitly placed around the grounds and poolside.
This pastoral pocket of Crete remains largely undiscovered. A local taverna cum mini-market is just 1.5km away with a long, quiet beach, further tavernas and shops at the larger village of Kolymbari (4 km). Also well worth exploring is Ravdoucha (6km), an undiscovered, pebble beach and sleepy village where the two tavernas enjoy an enviable reputation amongst the locals. The taverna at the edge of the beach specialises in fresh local fish caught that day while the other has earned a strong following for its Italian cuisine (thanks to a Sicilian chef). The speciality of the house is lobster with spaghetti accompanied by chilled local beer or wine…the only dilemma being which to sample first.
