Built in 1854, this turreted romantic neo-Renaissance listed château is located at the heart of the Mayenne département in western Loire. The closest shops, restaurants and cafés are in Meslay-du-Maine, 4km away. There is a market on Fridays and tennis courts at Meslay. Just 2km away are mini-golf, and a swin golf course, an accessible family alternative to golf.
The attractive historic town of Laval (18km) with its castle, ancient ramparts and timber-framed houses, has a Naïve art museum in honour of Henri 'Le Douanier' Rousseau who was born there. Laval has many good restaurants, as well as a Saturday market and the beautiful Perrine gardens overlooking the Mayenne River.
There are three interesting larger towns within an hour's drive: Angers (69km) with its massive ancient château, the Plantagenet city of Le Mans (80km) with its beautiful cathedral and 24 hour car race, and Rennes (94km) the lively capital of Brittany.
Nearby are many interesting sites to discover: Jublains (37km), the main Gallo-Roman site in western France; Sainte-Suzanne (31km), a beautifully preserved medieval town; La Ferte Clairbois (24km), a lively and fascinating reconstruction of a 13th century farm complex; discover the wonderful world of sculptor, painter and architect Robert Tatin in his museum at Cossé-le-Vivien (29km); over 30 underground caves to explore at Saulges (17km).
There are three main local châteaux open to the public: Château de Bourgon (33km), Château Craon (36km) and Lassay-le-Château (61km) with its 300 varieties of roses. The more famous Loire Valley châteaux are between 150km and 250km away.
There are bike hire, tennis courts and an 18 hole golf course in Laval (18km), more tennis courts at Villiers-Charlemagne (11km), and horse riding nearby (10km). At St-Denis-du-Maine (6km) there is a leisure lake with a beach for swimming, boats and mini-golf. On the Mayenne and Loire Rivers you can hire motorboats without a permit, and go canoeing and fishing (day and night), around 5km away. Close by is one of the most beautiful public footpaths in France, along the Mayenne River, with its protected wildlife, restaurants and leisure facilities. There are also very good cycle trails, river cruises, a nature park activity centre and a huge aquacentre (Laval).
