Anghiari Festival with the Southbank Sinfonia - 16-24th July 2011.
Many of the grey stone Tuscan water mills used to mill not only flour but oil also. Hidden away in the folds of this magnificent colourful landscape they were the great secret to Tuscany's country diet. Milling flour for ciabatta, many of the mills also made bread daily in their huge wood fired ovens which could be bought by local farm workers as a cheap lunch.
The countryside around medieval Anghiari is truly beautiful; alive with the sounds and scents of a bygone age. Gaze out across fields of sunflowers, small vineyards, silvery olive groves and and on to the wooded slopes of the Aretine mountains.
Recently restored, the mill has been decorated, furnished and equipped to the highest standards, offering charming, spacious accommodation and every possible comfort to provide a relaxing and peaceful holiday. Take a cooling dip in your own private pool, stroll about the lawned gardens as this is the perfect place to relax and unwind. There is a lovely arched loggia providing a shaded area for dining al fresco or perhaps reading a book from the well stocked vaulted library whilst enjoying a brimming glass of the local Chianti.
Local distances: For guests who wish to explore, the farmhouse is ideally situated only five minutes drive from the small unspoilt hilltop towns of Monterchi 5 km and Anghiari 8 km, both offering all services and an excellent choice of restaurants and pizzerias. Other nearby medieval market towns are Sansepolcro 15 km , Poppi (castle) 54 km, Bibbiena (great market) 47 km, Arezzo (frescoes, a jousting event, antiques fair 1st sunday of every month) 29 km and Subbiano 33 km. The ancient feudal Umbrian town of Citta di Castello is only 25 km away and if you fancy moving further afield then Siena 88 km, the spa town of Rapolano 68 km and lake Trasimeno (watersports) 70 km are all worth a day trip. This beautiful area of Tuscany still retains all of its original charm and the combination of fabulous scenery, many local festivals and open air concerts will make a holiday at this splendid mill one to remember.
