A very special place in a beautiful garden and setting, close to lively but untouristy villages as well as the superb sites of the Loire Valley.
This delightful mid-19th century manor house is situated in the heart of Anjou, at the centre of the Loire Valley, between Angers and Saumur whose historic centres and châteaux are well worth visiting. Saumur (general market on Saturdays) is famous for its equestrian displays and tank museum. It is close to the typical riverside village of La Menitré (1.5km) with shops and restaurants, a 'base nautique' with sailing and kayaking, bike hire and an indoor clay tennis court. The village is easily accessible along quiet country roads by bike or on foot.
The riverside villages of Les Rosiers-sur-Loire (5.5km), St-Mathurin-sur-Loire and Gennes (both 6km) also have shops, cafés and restaurants. At Beaufort-en-Vallée (8km) there are supermarkets and a Wednesday market. Montsoreau (33km) is another charming village with a beautiful château and a market on Sundays.
Les Rosiers-sur-Loire (5.5km) and Baugé (26km) have large outdoor swimming pools and tennis courts. There is horse riding at St-Mathurin-sur-Loire. Hot-air ballooning is possible at Gennes and Brissac-Quincé (19km), and lake swimming, sailing and tennis at Bagneux (20km), a 9 hole golf course at St-Hilaire-St-Florent (27km), and an 18 hole course at St-Jean-des-Mauvrets (18km).
Le Verdelay is perfectly located for discovering the fantastic Loire châteaux, the intriguing troglodyte dwellings, beautiful abbeys, and world-reknown and smaller vineyards of the Anjou and Loire Valley region. Due to its proximity to the Loire River, the region has a mild microclimate called 'la Douceur Angevine'. There is easy access to local trains from the property.
Some of the most famous Loire Valley châteaux are within an easy drive: Chinon (52km), Langeais (62km), Azay-le-Rideau (70km), and Villandry (73km). There are also very atmospheric older châteaux-forts at Montgeoffroy (11km), Baugé (26km), Montreuil-Bellay (37km), La Flèche (45km) and Plessis-Bourré (45km); and less well-known sites nearby: the rose garden at Doué-la-Fontaine (24km), and the abbey at Fontevraud-l'Abbaye (36km).
