Fontenay-le-Comte is a lively town with a good selection of shops, an all-day Saturday market, tennis courts, good restaurants and cafés, and horse riding.
The labyrinth of canals and waterways of the Marais Poitevin where you can hire leisure boats for an hour or a day is 12km away. The area is very rich in wildlife, and lovely walks can be taken in the forest of Mervent (11km) where bikes can be hired. Coulonges and Vouvant are well worth exploring, and there are abbeys and charming villages nearby. There is leisure lake for swimming at Chassenon-le-Bourg (6.5km), an 18 hole golf course at Niort (32km), and many beautiful sandy beaches along the coast with the closest in La Rochelle (55km), La Faute-sur-Mer (69km) and La Tranche-sur-Mer (80km).
