Malta- One Of The Mediterranean’s Best Destinations Beckons!

With its traditional Mediterranean climate, Malta is a popular tourist destination, complete with a fantastic culture, beautiful architecture and a selection of fantastic sites and indeed, sights.

There are three regions to Malta, the largest island known as Malta Island, the smallest island known as Comino and the far island known as Gozo. Each island holds its own specific treasures, offering something to the expansive culture of Malta.

The city of Rabat has a rich history and there are many ancient sites lying around the area. Some of the sights include St. Paul's Church, said to be the home of the saint. Pope John Paul II also visited this location on his pilgrimage in 1990. Guests can buy souvenirs and visit the Roman Museum on site as well as explore the catacombs.

Rabat is the extended part of the ancient city of Mdina. Mdina used to be a fortified palace and its origins date back across centuries. Many love to explore the archaic town, strolling through the thin stone alleys, just as they were hundreds of years ago. There are audio tours available, allowing tourists to go off on their own and enjoy this unique city.

The capital of Malta, Valletta, is, of course, a popular destination with guests as it is the most tourist-friendly city in the country. It is archaeologically fascinating and contains many beautiful relics and artefacts of its illustrious history. There are a host of cathedrals, from St. John's Co Cathedral to the The Grand Palace, a beautiful royal building which is now home to the President. The shops and restaurants are plentiful and feature fantastic cuisine, offering a whole range of menus, and for something extra special, guests can take a moonlight walk along the city walls, enjoying bright and grand views of Valletta.

Outside the built-up areas, Malta maintains an element of natural beauty which will be of some interest to visitors. Golden Bay, found on the north-west coast of the island, is a golden sand beach, Hagar Qim and Mnajdra are two ancient stone temples, set on a beautiful cliffside location, preserved wonderfully by a selection of structures nearby.

Tourists may wish to explore St. Julian's, north of Valletta, for its significant tourist industry, full of hotels, bars, nightclubs and fine restaurants. Quadro Restaurant is the best in the area, offering an eclectic menu for each and every guest.

For those interested in a fine trip to one of the Mediterranean's greatest locations, be sure to search Thomson's range of Malta holidays.
