Skiathos Resort Description Skiathos' main attraction is undeniably its stunning coastline - rocky headlands cloaked in pine and olive trees punctuated by one golden sandy beach after another - it is said to have a greater number of sandy beaches than any other Greek island, with some 60-odd bays and coves scattered along the south coast alone. Some are easily accessed by car or bus and offer perfect facilities for families with children, with shops and tavernas and a full range of watersports, whilst others can only be reached on foot or by boat and will thus appeal to those in search of a little more privacy. With the soft sand shelving very gently into the sea in most places and virtually no strong currents, bathing is very safe, even for less confident swimmers, so it is no surprise that in the peak of the summer season, the lure of the beaches is simply too hard to resist. The island's scarcely visited hinterland is equally inviting and offers superb terrain for walking. Travel in these parts is generally along ancient mule tracks and more recently made dirt roads, winding along gently rolling hills through shady olive groves and fragrant pine woods, past fertile fields and lush orchards. Here and there you will stumble upon an old church or an evocative monastery, such as Moni Kounistra, built in the 17th century after a monk found a miraculous icon close by in a tree. Skiathos Town is a picturesque cluster of whitewashed, red-tiled houses sprawling between two hills. Although Skiathos is the smallest of the Sporades islands, it is easily the most sophisticated, but despite boasting all the facilities required for lazy summer holidays, the town has lost none of its traditional Greek charm. Village life continues more or less unchanged in the steep, narrow lanes of the old town and even the busy high street remains endearingly disorganised in spite of its chic boutiques and tempting antique shops. Along the pretty quayside, too, lively waterfront bars and restaurants still rub shoulders with traditional ouzeries, as the locals enjoy watching the comings and goings in the two harbours as much as the holiday-makers do.
