Provence has a magic all of its own, and with its fascinating history, charming villages, its light, and countryside of olive groves, fields of lavender and vineyards, the same spell prevails which has captivated artists and writers over the centuries.
The Vaucluse, bordered by the rivers, Rhone in the west and Durance in the east, is a region of vineyards, lavender, honey, truffles and spectacular mountain scenery. It includes the Luberon Hills, with its picturesque hill villages, such as Menerbes, Bonnieux and Lourmarin, made famous more recently by Peter Mayle's books.
We feature some lovely villas in this area, in the countryside, and one on the outskirts of the pretty village of Gordes, with spectacular views across the valley. Within an easy drive are the wonderful historic towns of Avignon and Orange with their fascinating Roman and medieval remains, and famous summer music festivals.
A little further to the north are the Dentelles of Montmirail and the impressive Mont Ventoux, visible from miles around. The lively provençal town of Vaison-la-Romaine with its Roman ruins, is home to two of our properties. The Vaucluse is known also for its fine Côtes du Rhone wines, including Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas and Beaumes de Venise.
The south-western corner of Provence, the ouches-du-Rhone, is what many people consider to be the true and authentic Provence. Still very traditional, this is the land of Van Gogh, Marcel Pagnol and Daudet. Here, visits to the university town and former capital of Provence, Aix-en-Provence, and to the beautifully preserved Roman cities of Arles and Nîmes, are a must.
To savour the atmosphere of Provence, visit also the smaller towns and villages, such as St. Rémy de Provence, Fontvieille, Paradou and Maussane-les-Alpilles, with their weekly markets in central squares shaded by plane trees, where old men while away the afternoon playing boules.
Close by is the spectacularly situated Les Baux de Provence, the remains of a hilltop feudal stronghold, perched on the rocks. We are particularly pleased to offer an enlarged selection of properties in this beautiful and unspoilt area, both in central village locations and in the surrounding countryside.
Aix-en-Provence Oozing history and enchanting atmosphere, Aix-en-Provence began life as a Roman settlement by the warm springs in the lower Rhône valley. The city was capital of the region in the 12th century and a centre for art and learning in the 15th. It has since become known as ëthe city of a thousand fountains’; some of its most famous can be seen via a stroll down the tree-lined Cours Mirabeau.
Arles A gateway to the Camargue; the site of the best preserved Roman monument in the region and home to some of the finest museums in rural France, Arles has something for everyone. Its labyrinthine cobbled streets are littered with pavement cafes, ideal for a relaxing coffee.
Avignon An ancient and fascinating town, with a blend of Latin, Mediterranean, Provençal and Celtic cultures, Avignon is dominated by the ten-towered Palais des Papes, with its frescoes, chapels, and sculptured columns. Its ancient streets contain a mix of ancient and modern dwellings side-by-side, and many unexpected treasures.
Gordes A 16th century château stands high on the hilltops. Tumbling in tiers on the slopes below, little stone houses line medieval lanes. Just to the south of this picture postcard place is the ëVillage des Bories’-beehive buildings of dry stone, constructed without tools in the 16th century and inhabited until early in the twentieth century.
Hyeres Tourism came early to Hyeres, which gained fame and favour as a health resort in the late 18th century and boasts Queen Victoria and Robert Louis Stevenson amongst its visitors. It still retains a feel of a bygone age. Marseille A town of many influences, Marseille was originally constructed by the Greeks, and the Old Port area used as a means of import and export. To this day, Marseille is still regarded as one of France’s most important ports, and its’ new ferry terminal still carries on the town’s traditional links to Corsica, and North Africa. A bustling city, Marseille retains its old-fashioned charm, and its labyrinthine streets have plenty to offer for young or old, from fashionable boutiques to traditional cafés.
NÎmes Perhaps the meeting point of Provence and Languedoc, Nîmes is an architectural kaleidoscope. The glass and steel Caree d’Art, and some creative contemporary housing contrast sharply with the twisting streets and cosy squares of historic Nîmes, the pools and patios of 18th century Jardin de la Fontaine, and the superbly preserved Roman amphitheatre ëLes Arenes’.
Orange Inhabited since the heyday of Augustus Caesar, the inaptly named town of Orange nestles, not amid citrus orchards as one may expect, but surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. A busy regional centre, its shady squares are excellent summer strolling grounds. The Roman theatre offers perfect acoustics and a dramatic venue for the town’s prestigious festival of music.
Salon-de-Provence Take a leap back in time in this ancient town, which has a history spanning almost two millennia, and whose most famed inhabitant, Nostradamus, looked cryptically to the future, penning his predictions amid the atmospheric streets of the Old Town. Empari Castle is the setting for the summer music festival.
Toulon A maritime history of mixed results is commemorated in the Musee de la Marine of this notable naval base town. Little of old Toulon was left after the ravages of the last war, but the fish market is worth a visit for atmosphere as well as for interest, and the quai Stalingrad is a lively social scene of shops and cafés.
