Loire Valley Resort Description

In the Loire Valley, the chateauxs are sumptuous and the cities sophisticated. Bright fields of sunflowers glow like burnished gold. Hedgerows are intertwined with honeysuckle and roses. Welcoming inns serve wonderful food accompanied by light white wine and sleepy villages, unchanged by time, enjoy the serenest settings.

This is the Loire and the mood in the valley reflects the gentle flow of its beautiful and benevolent river. Le Mans is the French home of motor racing, its world famous 24-hour race drawing fans from around the world and a futuristic attraction for family fun is the fabulous Futuroscope theme park in Poitiers.

Bourges
The entrepreneurial spirit has been celebrated in Bourges since the city’s most famous son, Jacques Coeur, built himself a reputation as the most successful merchant of the Middle Ages. His very grand ëpalais’ is well worth visiting, with its Turkish baths and vaulted gallery.

Châteaux of the Loire
Topping many a tour list of France’s foremost châteaux is the romantic, once royal palace of Chenonceau. Resplendently spanning the Cher with a series of graceful arches, its elegant outline reflected in the river, it appears (as Flaubert put it) to “float on air and water”.

A much more lighthearted residence, the Château d’Azay le Rideau is mirrored in the waters of the River Indre, on whose banks it basks. Pools, lily ponds, moats and weirs create an air of coolness in the gardens of this summer palace, while a light and airy interior, furnished with a very feminine touch, brings a similarly relaxed mood within the building.

Futuroscope
An ultra modern addition to the attractions in Poitiers, the theme park’s highlights include Europe’s biggest cinema screen in the Kinemax and a ëmagic carpet’ cinema with one screen on the floor to give viewers the feeling of flight.

Le Mans
Best known for its association with the motor industry, most visited for its exceptional Grand Prix (held annually on the third weekend in June) and its fascinating Automobile Museum, Le Mans also has a historic core - the Vieux Mans - whose fortified walls enclose an appealing area of intimate courtyards, Renaissance houses and half timbered halls.

Nantes
Chic, cosmopolitan and sophisticated, Nantes is a successful blend of old and new, tradition and change. Tall towerblocks make a modern skyline behind the port, stylish bars and restaurants jostle for space in the medieval centre and Art Nouveau squares are at odds with their setting.

Poitiers
A 14th century centre for the arts and intellectual studies (with Rabelais one of its students), is today a modern and upbeat city with a wealth of architectural interest in its atmospheric old quarter.

Tours
A former French capital and now a friendly and lively university town, Tours has been refreshed and renewed by sympathetic restoration of its medieval heart. Today Cafés, courtyards and crooked towers contribute to an infectiously enjoyable atmosphere. Visit the Cathedrale St Gatien with its marvellous medieval stained glass window, the Musée des Beaux Arts and the Château Royal.

Cholet
A town with much history, Cholet played its part in many French battles and in the 18th century was renowned for being the military capital of the Vendée. Today the town has a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere, with the Jardins de Mail and remains of the Château de Cholet. Instead of battles, modern Cholet enjoys a reputation for its festivals and exhibitions and in April 2002 will host its 16th annual amateur theatre festival (6th -13th April).

Loches
An important medieval stronghold, Loches is famous for its fortifications dating back to the 11th century and its large Norman keep built by the Count of Anjou. The area around Loches contains a wealth of places to expore, including the Loches National Forest, walks along the banks of the river Indre and the Underground Quarry at Vignemont. In the summer, evening markets bring an extra special atmosphere to the streets of the old town and take place between 5pm and midnight.
