Sheltered by the more westerly and mountainous Canary Islands from all but warm breezes and a little Atlantic rainfall, Fuerteventura lies only 60 miles off the African coast. Here the sun shines almost every day of the year on miles of peaceful coves, rolling dunes and almost white sandy beaches washed by the crystal clear waters of the Atlantic. Fuerteventura, with its slow relaxed way of life, is an unrivalled destination for sun worshipers, naturists, water sports enthusiasts and those seeking to explore this ' tranquil Island', still in the infancy of it's development.
For the ardent 'Island Seeker', there is much to find in the way of 'hidden delights' throughout the island. The old island capital of Betancuria, the scattered picturesque white-washed villages, the barren yet interesting landscape and the island of Labos are but a few of the 'unpackaged delights' which will make your holiday a truly unique experience.
Corralejo: Although expanding rapidly and now one of the major resorts on Fuerteventura, the heart of Corralejo still maintains its scruffy Canarian charm. Originally a fishing village, the old jetty and village square are still the evening meeting places for locals and visitors alike. There is an increasing wealth of restaurants and bars, a growing number of shops of all types but still a scarcity of noisy discotheques.
The beaches in Corralejo alternate between stretches of beautiful pale sand and rocky outcrops. At the southern end of the village the coastline becomes predominately sandy. Here the 'Las Dunas' National Park starts and the building stops. These unspoilt beaches stretch for several miles south of Corralejo ending just a short drive north of Parque Holandes.
Parque Holandes: Here, only half a mile from the coast amongst the mainly residential community, is some of the best quality accommodation on the Island. The focal point is the central piazza, with its huge swimming pool, children's play area, restaurant and bar. Floodlit tennis, mini-golf, riding stables and a beauty and health clinic are all nearby.
El Cotillo: At the north west tip of Fuerteventura is the unkempt old fishing village of El Cotillo. Here, time to a large extent has stood still: the bars, restaurants and shops mostly reflecting the tastes and characteristics of the locals. However, for those who like to explore, El Cotillo can offer some of the best beaches on the Island.
Bahia Calma: The fast developing, mainly German resort of Bahia Calma, is just an hours drive south of the airport, located at the northern tip of the vast expanses of flat golden sand which form the Sotovento beaches.
