A distinctively different part of France, much of Brittany pushes out into the Atlantic, surrounded on three sides by ocean. The northern coast of Brittany is wildly wonderful, its pink granite cliffs carved by time and tide are punctuated with fishing ports and the beaches of popular resorts.
More sheltered and with a milder climate, the rural woodlands to the south are criss-crossed with little rivers, which run to the coast. In the east are the medieval market towns and border fortresses; while the wind-battered west coast, exposed, eroded and dramatically rugged, is well deserving of its title Finistere - ëthe end of the earth’.
The most westerly corner of the country, this is where Breton traditions are best observed, from their colourful Celtic culture to their costumes and creperies. Officially part of France for almost five centuries, Brittany is still spiritually individual and eminently tourable.
REGIONAL CUISINE
Lobster, mussels, oysters and ëcoquilles St Jacques’ scallops are among the mouthwatering specialities of many a restaurant here. Try them all in a taster dish ëassiette de fruits de mer’ - accompanied by a dry white Muscadet from southern Brittany or a long glass of cool cider, the traditional drink of the region. Sweet and savoury crepes come with a bewildering choice of fillings for a quick snack or delicious dessert.
