Alonissos Resort Description

Alonissos is a sleeping beauty that only briefly awakens during the month of August, when the Greeks themselves like to go on holiday.

For the rest of the year, the island retains an exceptionally unhurried atmosphere, where the only distraction is provided by the regular arrivals and departures of boats from Skiathos and Skopelos and - rather less frequently - the Greek mainland.

The little port of Patitiri is the gateway to Alonissos and is the closest thing the island has to a bustling centre.

Half a dozen tavernas and cafés line the harbour and the small shingle beach that constitute the waterfront in this pretty bay framed by curiously shaped rocky headlands, whilst in the backstreets, a small cluster of shops caters for the needs of locals and visitors alike.

But the island's unique charm is best appreciated in Alonissos Old Town, precariously perched on a hilltop approximately 3 kms inland.

An earthquake in 1965 forced the village to be abandoned, but life has gradually returned to its labyrinthine cobbled lanes and stepped alleyways, as many of the enchanting old village houses have been carefully restored.

Visiting the Old Town - which nowadays would be more accurately described as a village - is a delight, but to actually stay here is to experience sublime serenity and utter peace.

Most of the village is impassable to traffic and rambling along the ancient paths you can delight in the tiny, carefully tended gardens and courtyards of the restored houses and the wildflowers that grow unabashed from those ruined buildings that still lie abandoned.

The highest point of the village is blessed with views over both sides of the island to the sea, a fact that the handful of charming traditional tavernas make the most of.

A network of dirt tracks and ancient paths makes the island perfect for walking, whilst those who are determined to remain blissfully idle can find some rather lovely and totally unspoilt pebble beaches hidden in sheltered bays and tiny coves, some of which can be visited by boat in high season.

Alonissos is also the base for boat trips into the Marine Park of the northern Sporades, an important sanctuary for the endangered Mediterranean monk seal which covers the uninhabited islands to the east.

Whether you prefer to spend your time walking or painting, lazing on an uncrowded beach or simply absorbing the tranquil atmosphere of the old village, you will find that a week or two in Alonissos is the perfect antidote to the stresses of modern life.
