Alentejo is situated in the south-central of Portugal, the region is separated from the rest of Portugal by the Tagus river, and extends to the south where it borders the Algarve.
Its main cities are Évora, Portalegre, Beja, Serpa and Sines.
The huge plain of Alentejo, which sweeps over the southern half of Portugal, is dotted with picturesque castle towns and quiet, hilltop villages, olive groves and fields of cork oaks and sunflowers. Gold is the color that dominates this quiet region. Golden wheat fields, golden beaches and a golden treasure trove of history and culture. This sleepy province is an ideal holiday spot for those seeking heat, relaxation and a little culture. The Alentejo is becoming increasingly popular for its stunning coastal beauty and spectacular beaches.
The Alentejo is the least populated of the five Portuguese regions, Alentejo is considered of one of the most picturesque parts of Portugal (colourful landscape, wide open roads and dazzling whitewashed villages). It is also the up and coming region for the production of wine--and the region has plenty of interesting towns, castles, and archaeology to keep the visitor happy for weeks, for example the remarkable traces of successive cultures: dolmens and cromlechs, Roman and Arab vestiges.
Elvas, near to the Spanish frontier, is the biggest stronghold in the country, and it is on the main highway between Lisbon and Madrid.
Aside from the many tourist attractions in the region (such as the towns of Evora, Borba and Estremoz), it is wine that is currently putting the Alentejo region on the map, and more precisely its red wines.
